Our Story

As recently featured in most of the UK national papers and radio, The Heworth Inn is nestled in York's Heworth conservation area, which is one of the city’s most picturesque areas of greenery and victorian architecture, as well as being the birth place of Dame Judi Dench.

The building dates back to 1889 and was previously a doctors surgery and a Methodist church (with a strict observance of temperance). The property then underwent some renovation work to turn it into a small hotel with en-suite letting rooms. Apparently the venue as is was formally known (The Shoulder of Mutton) attracted various celebrity stays, including the actor Paul Newman Stayed here at the peak of his career. In the 80’s our sun trapped garden won the prize of 'Best Beer Garden in Britain’, which we have one of the largest in York, perfect for winding down in the summer months.

Wether you are looking for a place to stay while you visit the city, a high quality homemade meal or just to relax and have a social drink, we will have just what you are looking for. Our freshly decorated bedrooms have just been given a bit of love and can cater from the single traveler right up to our family room for four.

Our kitchen team are passionate about their home cooked menu, and everything is about excellent quality and value, without pretentiousness!

Our bar, snug and garden room have all been recently refurbished also and offer a beautiful setting to relax and unwind, with a range of wines, cask ales and various menus served from breakfast until 9pm.

The garden room is available for functions and private hire all year round, with weddings being booked from 2019. We also pride ourselves on our very warm welcome and home from home environment, no matter wether you are a regular or a one time visiter, you can always be assured of being well looked after, by our dedicated team, who will ensure your every need is well catered for.

We are just ten minutes walk from the medieval city walls, we have off street parking for residents, and are conveniently located for public transport, with bus stops on a main route in and out of the city centre and Monks Cross retail park just outside of our front door.

We are a dog friendly venue, but in the main bar and hotel only.

Thank you for taking the time to check us out, we hope to be able to welcome you to The Heworth Inn soon!
